For the face I copied a photograph. Then I didn't work on it for like...a year, cuz I was gonna scrap it, but all the art schools I'm going for require a self-portrait so I did the hair and shading all from memory/other photos of hair/shading. HARD WORK that was, but I guess it paid off. ^^; And thats the long drawn out answer for you.
